San Antonio River Walk, History and Evolution
The River Walk began as a flood control project after a devastating flood in 1921 that claimed more than 50 lives and caused millions of dollars in damage to the city. The Olmos Dam and a bypass channel were built to redirect water.
In 1938, architect Robert H. H. Hugman envisioned transforming the river into a scenic urban promenade with bridges, stairways, and landscaped walkways. Construction started in 1939, and soon the River Walk became a cultural and tourist gem.
